Episode 42: Peppur Chambers

We are thrilled to welcome acclaimed actress, author, playwright, and friend of the podcast Peppur Chambers, who joined us from Prague, Czech Republic this weekend, where she is preparing for the opening of her one woman stage production, Harlem’s Awakening. Peppur joined us to talk about her career, what brought her to Prague, and her memories of Shawn from their high school days. It was a great conversation and one of our favorite podcasts that we have done. We try to keep things on a classy note by rounding out the episode with our recap of Downton Abbey, S6 Ep4, all the while fighting the urge to book a Viking River Cruise.

Be sure to check out the inspiration for Peppur’s show, her excellent novella Harlem’s Awakening, as well as follow her on social media:

Our thanks again to Peppur for joining us! We are excited to be able to share the podcast with you through additional outlets in the very near future, including LibSyn, Soundcloud, and the Google Play Store. More to come on that.

Cheers, and thanks for listening!

Episode 40: Hans Gruber and The Goblin King

Greetings and thanks for checking out Episode 40 of the podcast. This week, we spend most of our time talking about the passing of two greats, David Bowie and Alan Rickman, and what they meant to us personally. As per usual these days, Shawn relays a story about Bowie that relates to another formative childhood trauma, but really, does that surprise you by now?  We wrap things up with our weekly visit to the Crawley household, discussing all the doings from last week’s Downton Abbey episode.

If you have not already, you check out our career spanning David Bowie playlist on Spotify.

Cheers, and thanks very much for listening!

Episode 36: Soiled kimono

Soiled kimono. How is that for an enigmatic title? Well, once you have seen Bill Murray’s gloriously bizarre Christmas special, A Very Murray Christmas, it will make perfect sense. We talked about that slice of holiday fried gold, as well as the unfortunate but unsurprising demise of Scott Weiland, our favorite Christmas specials, the underwhelming Batman v. Superman trailer, and the uneven wrap to this series of Doctor Who. Would somebody please get Peter Capaldi some scripts worthy of his prodigious talent? There are some spoilers here for the season finale of Doctor Who, so you have been warned.

As always, we thank you for listening.

Episode 35: It yelped!

Feeling a little sluggish post Thanksgiving turkey coma/Black Friday shopping spree? Episode 35 of the Mundanity podcast is here to help shake you out of that slumber. The week we recap the road to Shawn’s, um, non-traditional holiday meal, gaze in awe at the world-conquering phenomenon that is Adele’s 25, shout out to the end of Alex Hirsch’s exceptional Gravity Falls, and dissect the Captain America: Civil War trailer that dropped seemingly out of nowhere last week. Listen below or subscribe to the pod via iTunes.

Cheers, and thanks as always for listening.

Episode 33: Connnnnn!

Hey, it is another edition of Mundanity pod live! We are continuing the conversation from The Pub at International Plaza in Tampa, this time focusing on the “con” experience with our resident nerds, co-host Shawn and our friend Nick, both veterans of San Diego Comic Con and the Star Wars Celebration events. The conversation stems from a really interesting article about the geek convention experience called Ron Weasley Made Me Sad, which we’re posting here (be sure to read the comments as well for the full experience). It raises some really interesting points and resulted in a great conversation with much fun and hilarity. This is part one of the conversation; part two will air as episode 37 the week of December 14 to get you good an ready for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Here is a link to the article.

Episode 32a: SPECTRE spoilercast!

So here’s the appendix to our last episode, only this one is full of spoilers for SPECTRE. Let me make this as clear as possible: if you have not seen the movie yet, and do not want some major plot details spoiled for you, give this one a pass. Did we mention there were spoilers? YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Cheers,

Jim and Shawn (and Nick)

Episode 32: License to pod

We are back with another edition of Mundanity Pod Live, this time coming to you from The Pub at International Plaza in Tampa. We settled into a corner booth there to record a James Bond-centric pod with our good friend Nick Parrucci, who you may remember from his stellar voice of the listener segment. We talk about the latest Bond film, SPECTRE, and well as all of our favorite Bond moments through the years, including our favorite scenes, villains, and actresses. No spoilers for SPECTRE in this episode, but we did record an extra, spoiler-filled episode that will drop on Wednesday of this week if you are interested in a deeper dive into that film. A special shoutout to our server Brittany at The Pub, who put up with us for four hours while we recorded. Also, listen in a for a special Bond-related surprise from Shawn at the beginning and end of the pod,

Cheers, and thanks for listening!

Episode 31: Happy MundanOWeen!

Greetings all from the confines of the man-sized closet. Shawn locked me in there so he could do the intro this week, but he’s still making me do all the production and editing. Being the host isn’t all intros and parades of golden haired podcast groupies, my friend! (Wait, forget I mentioned that.) There’s real work involved too, as far as you know. Anyway, episode 31 is here, and it is dedicated mainly to a discussion of our top horror movies, with an impromptu tribute to the recently departed Grantland website, as well the the sad tale of my broken foot. It’s a doozy of an episode, my friends.

Cheers friends, and thanks for listening. And will somebody let me out of this closet?

Episode 29: The listeners strike back

We are debuting a new segment for episode 29 called Voice of the Listener, and it debuts with our good friend and Rush fanboy Nick Parrucci weighing on with a (foolish) comparison between Radiohead and Rush. I can only assume his judgment was clouded by his giddiness at seeing comedy legends John Cleese and Eric Idle on the same night, though perhaps one too many horchata and rums played a part as well. Before all of that, Shawn and I finally relent and engage in some serious binge watching that the other has been demanding, with Shawn seeking late entry to the Clone Club (#teamHelena) by watching Orphan Black, while I jump on The Flash train with my son. Both of us are kicking ourselves for not giving in sooner. We also talk about all of the fast-breaking Star Wars news, and relaunch the Mundanity Pod Charity Challenge. This time, I agree to do the one thing that I hate above all else – run.

Cheers, and thanks for listening!
